Eel Food Safari Programme

Poets House

On the starter menu at Ely’s very own boutique hotel restaurant will be a smoked eel parcel with confit tomato, chicory and truffle dressing.  So if you haven’t tasted eel before why not book a table this weekend – enjoy!

The Old Fire Engine House Restaurant

Renowned for their use of locally sourced ingredients, the Old Fire Engine, which celebrates 50 years of trading this year, will be providing smoked eel on their menu across the weekend, with a promise of an Eel Pie - fingers crossed!  In addition, the morning and afternoon tea menu will have a novelty eel appearance, so well worth checking out.

Lemon Tree Deli Cafe

Established now as a superb deli and café in the heart of Ely and renowned for their homemade cakes and bakes, Lemon Tree will be decorating their scrumptious chocolate brownies with eels!  Call in over the Festival Weekend and try one.

The Ely Fudge Company

Ely’s very own handmade fudge company offers a wide variety of flavours of fudge from the traditional to the more adventurous.  For this weekend only, they have created the ultimate Jelly Eel Fudge, combining their handmade fudge with colourful wiggly eels – a must for all children and adults alike!

3 at 3

Well known for their freshly prepared, locally sourced menu, 3 at 3 will be offering an “Eely Good Platter” (we love the name!) of smoked eel and hot smoked salmon with speciality dips and sauces. In addition, they will be serving a smoked eel chowder.  Enjoy with a glass of locally sourced beer or wine either served inside or al fresco.

The Royal Standard

The team has come up with a fabulous starter of pan fried sushi rice, smoked eel and wasabi goats curd accompanied with a mushroom and beetroot salsa.  What a combination - get your table booked now!  In fact, why not stay over in one of their individually styled rooms, which have just opened..

Peacock's Tearoom

Award winning Peacocks Tearooms will be serving Eel Catcher’s Tea which is a strong welcoming brew laced with rum.  In addition, they will be offering their Isle of Ely Pudding, a steamed pudding topped with apples and clotted cream, sitting in a lake of caramel sauce – sounds yummy!

The Prince Albert

The team at “Ely’s Proper Pub” have once again come up with an inspiring starter of caramelised kumquat, caperberry and smoked eel bruschetta with lemon and caviar soft cheese and horseradish oil.  What a way to start a meal off!

Julia's Tea Rooms and Gallery

We are delighted that Julia's will be featuring in our safari with their "sandwich of the week".  Over the weekend you can expect a smoked eel and horseradish sandwich with Dijon mustard and chicory served with homeade coleslaw.  Plus an eel shaped biscuit for that sweet after treat.  So that is lunch sorted!

Habis, Littleport

Our Eel Safari has spread further this year with the participation of Littleport’s latest new restaurant Habis.  Famed for their Mediterranean and English fusion food, they will be serving their own take on an eel recipe by their favourite Spanish poet, Pablo Neruda, who wrote the beautiful poem "Ode to Conger Chowder".   "Habis Neruda Chowder" takes its inspiration from joining together a wonderful English festival and a Spanish legend so well worth the short drive to Littleport to check this dish out.

Ely's Riverside Safari

We are pleased to announce our very first Riverside Safari!  Visit Ely’s waterside anytime across the weekend and fully embrace the safari concept by indulging in a three-course meal.

Grand Central

Start your Riverside Safari meal in Grand Central’s American themed restaurant with a first course of Fisherman’s Platter consisting of loaded seafood potato skins served with tartar sauce.

The Cutter Inn

Stroll next door and dine in the traditional surroundings of a British style pub and continue your Safari with an Eel Catcher’s Pie.   This home-made fish pie with its creamy parsley sauce, topped with mash and cheddar cheese is sure to delight.

RBK

To complete your meal, choose one of the specially created cocktails (or mocktails) from Ely Riverside’s latest place to meet, eat and relax.  From ‘Wagon Wh’eel’ to ‘Achilles Eel’, RKB is the perfect way to end a truly eel inspiring evening out.

Courses can be purchased individually but if you opt for all three and obtain a stamp upon ordering then you will receive a tub of complimentary 'Electric CIAO gelato with jellied eels'.  Wow what a trueely wonderful safari!!
